The shift in modern work culture has brought work into our living environment as well, with Covid only accelerating the process. Almost all work from home occupations requires users to sit at a desk in front of a laptop or desktop screen for long durations. It is of vital importance that the furniture that becomes the 'enablers' for completing these tasks be comfortable. The traditional working desk is not ideal for using a laptop, and the laptop itself is a device that is designed for convenience and not for comfort.

The outcome of of the design process was Lean, a writing and laptop desk designed keeping in mind the ergonomic requirements of a human body. The objective was to ensure that the final form would be simple and elegant.

Design Process

The design process for lean started with iterating various forms that resonated with the idea of being simple and elegant in perception.

A parallel study was started to analyse the ergonomic requirements and usage preferences of various individuals.

Based on the ergonomic and user studies, new forms were explored through scale models and drawings, while trying to keep certain characters of the initial forms.

Testing

Before proceeding with final prototyping, 1:1 drawings were used to prepare low fidelity mockups, based on which the final dimensions were further adjusted from the ergonomic studies to suit the tested users.
